A Walk in the City was Sandile Radebe’s inaugural solo exhibition, presented in October 2014 at the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Conceived as an immersive urban environment, the exhibition transformed the school’s circular gallery into a landscape of sculptural forms inspired by the rhythms, textures, and visual languages of Johannesburg. Through abstraction, familiar urban inscriptions were reconfigured into spatial propositions that privileged movement, materiality, and perception over linguistic legibility. A totemic central structure imagined new possibilities for public sculpture, while surrounding works invited viewers to navigate the installation as they might the city itself. Rather than representing Johannesburg, the exhibition sought to think through it, positioning urban space as both the subject and material from which new artistic forms could emerge.
