Graphoasis is a collaborative, ephemeral installation created by Elgin Rust and Sandile Radebe for Afrika Burn ’14 in Tankwa Town, situated in the vast Karoo desert. In this remote setting—with no electricity, running water, or cell signal—participants known as ‘burners’ gather for a week of radical self-expression and community-building, embracing interdependence in an unforgiving environment.
The installation was conceived to echo the presence of a graffiti tag in the desert. Constructed from triangular cardboard pieces painted with spray paint, the structure formed geometric letterforms fastened together with intersecting lattes, hessian rope, and a staple gun. As the installation expanded, it cast dynamic shadows that shifted with the sun, offering momentary shade and transforming the tag into a shelter—an oasis.
Rooted in the raw, improvised aesthetic of graffiti, Graphoasis was both a visual marker and a site of interaction. It engaged with the transience of the desert gathering, while also reflecting on the performative and communal aspects of graffiti writing. The work invited reflection on impermanence, co-creation, and the power of claiming space—however temporarily—in a vast and indifferent landscape.
