Amaskopas is inspired by the colourful popcorn sold in South African townships, but Radebe also integrates amabheqe forms into the sculpture, turning the traditional beadwork into sculptural elements. The use of spray paint on pine wood brings this fusion to life, creating a vibrant and striking piece that serves as a maquette for public sculpture. The amabheqe forms, often used in traditional crafts, are reimagined here as a modern, urban art form, embodying both the cultural richness of South African heritage and the playful, colourful energy of the street snack. Through this work, Radebe blends everyday cultural symbols with the potential for monumental public art, inviting a conversation about the intersection of tradition and contemporary urban life.
