Concrete Cipher

A mural painted on a highway support pillar featuring faceted, geometric forms at the base and stylised graffiti lettering at the top in soft neon tones.

Installed as part of the Back to the City festival in 2019 beneath the M2 highway overpass in Johannesburg, this collaborative mural exemplifies a layered visual conversation. The angular, prismatic forms evoke Sandile’s ongoing exploration of ucu—sculptural configurations rooted in indigeneity and abstraction—while the vivid graffiti lettering above, by Gogga, injects the composition with linguistic flair and urban energy. Together, the work occupies a liminal space between tradition and rebellion, materiality and message, sculpture and script.
