Colour Me In is a participatory chalk drawing project designed to address the enduring spatial inequalities in Cape Town’s urban landscape. Rooted in the racially segregated planning of apartheid, the city remains divided along racial lines, with wealthy areas historically reserved for the white minority. This intervention sought to challenge these boundaries by inviting the public to actively redraw the city’s map, subverting the imposed racial divisions.
Participants were empowered to reshape the urban environment, positioning themselves as key players in how they interact with, occupy, and use their city. The intervention culminated in a large-scale drawing installation, enriched with political slogans, personal messages, and collective expressions. In doing so, the project became a public space for dialogue, fostering a participatory platform for engagement and collective reimagining of Cape Town’s future.
Through the act of drawing and marking space, Colour Me In transformed the city’s limitations into a site for individual and collective expression—challenging the past and imagining more inclusive spatial futures.
